When I first saw the email about the Work and Travel USA program, I knew it was something I had to do. It was my chance to explore the world, live independently, and experience life outside of Singapore. But the decision wasn’t easy.
All my friends backed out, and I was torn between staying for an internship or travelling alone to the United States. What finally convinced me was a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
That step led me to Mt. Rainier National Park, where I worked in housekeeping at Paradise Inn. It was a humbling start — from cleaning rooms to making beds — but it taught me responsibility, teamwork, and pride in hard work. I found joy in small moments: chatting with guests, laughing with my multinational team, and earning my first paycheck through my own effort.
Outside of work, Mt. Rainier’s beauty was breathtaking. I hiked through meadows, camped under the stars, and even learned swing dancing during staff events. My colleagues’ enthusiasm for life inspired me to be braver and more curious. I realized happiness wasn’t about technology or convenience, but about connection, nature, and shared experiences.

Saying goodbye was bittersweet, but the friendships, lessons, and sense of independence I gained will stay with me forever. From the snowy peaks of Mt. Rainier to the city lights of New York, this journey changed how I see the world and myself. To anyone still hesitant — take that first step. It might just lead you to discover who you truly are.
