f I had to describe my Work and Travel USA experience in one word, it would be awesome.

I had always wanted to understand how different work environments and cultures could be, and this was my first real chance to live on my own. When Speedwing gave a talk at NTU about the WAT programme, I knew immediately that this was what I wanted. Even though anxiety hit the moment I landed in Orlando, the helpful orientation and smooth process quickly eased my worries.

I worked as a lifeguard at Aquatica, the newly opened waterpark under SeaWorld. The first few days were tough with swim tests, Red Cross CPR training, and on-the-job familiarisation. Yet those challenges built lasting friendships among people from Singapore, Ukraine, Belgium, Thailand, and the United States. Nationality soon stopped mattering.

Every day on duty brought energy and joy. Hearing kids shout “I saw dolphins!” as they splashed out of the slides made everything worthwhile. Under the hot sun, I learned patience, discipline, and professionalism. Rotating stations every thirty minutes kept us alert and reminded us that guests’ safety always came first.

During my free time, I explored the many theme parks of Florida, rode my first roller coaster, and even swam with a dolphin named Thai-Le at Discovery Cove. Shopping at outlet stores, weekend trips to Miami, and late-night laughter with friends became treasured memories.

More than just a job, the experience taught me responsibility, communication, and gratitude for home. From saving lives to travelling cross-country with newfound friends, every moment strengthened my independence.

Work and Travel USA showed me that courage leads to growth, and that the world becomes smaller when you dare to dive in.
