Six Flags the Great Escape, WAT USA 2014

When my professor announced “Pens down!” after my last freshman exam, fireworks went off in my mind. In less than three days, I would be flying to New York to begin my Work & Travel USA adventure — my first solo trip abroad.
At first, the decision wasn’t easy. I had to skip my school’s orientation camps and go without any friends. But the words of David Mitchell echoed in my mind: “Travel far enough, you meet yourself.” So I took the leap.
I worked as a Rides Attendant at Six Flags The Great Escape in upstate New York. My job was to ensure guests were safe and happy — from checking harnesses to giving safety spiels. It was challenging but fulfilling, especially when smiling children and grateful visitors reminded me why I loved what I did. Over time, I became more confident, talkative, and comfortable interacting with people from all walks of life.
The friends and mentors I met there were unforgettable. My colleagues were full of life and laughter, and my supervisor inspired me with his calm leadership even during a roller-coaster breakdown incident. Working with them every day shattered any stereotypes I had about Americans and showed me what teamwork and positivity truly mean.

After eight weeks of work, I spent another month traveling across 12 states — from New York to California, and from the Grand Canyon to Yellowstone and Yosemite. Standing before those breathtaking landscapes felt surreal, like walking through a dream.
Looking back, this journey was more than a summer job. It was a life-changing experience that taught me independence, confidence, and courage. To anyone still hesitating, I say this: take that leap.
You only live once.
